Promised

I pulled my ATM card out of my wallet and a small, folded piece of paper slipped out and fell to the floor.

I carry this piece of paper everywhere.

When K and I backpacked around the world it was in my money belt.

It is worn at it's creases. It is smudged and soft.

I take it out and read it every now and then.

Other times, like at the market, it just falls out and I read it without having meant to do so.

I like to be reminded of my promises.

It reads...

I, Jessica, choose you, K, to be my husband,
to grow together as an equal partner in my life.

I promise to hold my love firm, from this day forward,
for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health,
to be faithful to you and to love and cherish you as my life long companion.

Where you go, I will go and where you lodge, I will lodge.

Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.

When you die, a part of me will also die,

And with you a part of my heart shall be buried.

This is my solemn vow.

To the community:
We vow to forever include each of you in our hearts
and
to join you in our common struggle
to enrich our families and communities
through service, love, sacrifice and courage.

K, I give you this ring as a symbol of my commitment, constant faith and abiding love.
Remembering the generations that have come before,
and with hope for the generations yet to be. I give you all that I am and all that I may become.

Happy Anniversary, K.

One of the things I most respect about your blog is how you never have an unkind word to say about your husband. I should take a cue from you...

That's just lovely...as is your carrying it with you as a reminder. If it was in my wallet, the twins would have pulled it out and eaten it. Sigh.

I saw you take them out of your wallet in Chicago when Elizabeth Edwards was talking about service to community and it really touched ME, actually. I've been meaning to print out ours and carry them in a similar way.

Vert sweet!! I keep a black & white picture of my husband & I in my wallet. Over the years it has gotten all bent and creased as well...something to hold on to when they aren't there.

Happy Anniversary! Hope he put on a park ranger uniform for ya tonight!!!

Omaha Mama said...

That is beautiful. And what a nice way to remember them. A commitment to them. I just pull them out (verbally) when hubs and I are arguing - "Oh buddy, you are stuck with me! Don't forget those vows you took!!!" Doesn't hold quite the same beauty.

Happy Anniversary to you and K.

You guys flat-out ROCK. I love you guys. Seriously. Not in that drunken, arm-slung-over-shoulder way, either (although I feel that way, too). I love reading stories about you and your family and your relationship. Every time I'm here I feel like I'm reading the blog of a friend as opposed to the blog of a "blog author". Do you know what I mean? You guys are such a warm family...good people.

God, I am totally rambling. I just woke up and I've had this awful kink in my neck for three days and my whole upper body is like this solid mass and it's got its own heartbeat and I haven't had any coffee yet. I'm a bit...weird right now. ;)

Hey, Happy Anniversary! The part that you wrote that Your God will be My God. Does that mean you and K will look into RCIA? I think you will find it challenging and interesting. You can just take the classes, you don't have to join! Do you live near this parish? http://www.spxconyers.com/

Happy Anniversary. I love the verse from the book of Ruth. It has served me well as a Navy wife and it has been my joy to say it to Big Daddy each time we were uncertain of where the Navy was sending us. Congrats on a loving marriage and another year together. May God continue to bind you and K close together!

We're doing good to get our wedding rings on when we go someplace nice.

(He's an electrician and I'm an archaeologist, so we don't wear them daily. I did get a cheap silver ring similar to my wedding ring to wear in the field. But I'm still pudgy from the baby, so none fit!)
