Looking Ahead

I have heard it said that whatever you find yourself doing at midnight on New Year's Eve is a sign of what you'll be doing all year.

So, ojalá, let us hope that K and I will be sleeping all year!!

Since we are ALWAYS asleep by midnight on New Year's Eve I like to think instead that anything that happened near the close of the year could indicate how the coming year will unfold.

If that interpretation is allowable then there are a number of ways 2008 could go in The House of Joy.

My children could easily spend another year running in circles around the house without their clothes on.

Yipee! All hail the short naked people!

It could be a year of house guests...

Our last guest, my friend Laura, just left today.

It could also be a year of upheaval as I have recently learned that three couples I know are breaking up.

All three situations involve infidelity and all three couples have children.

My friends, the parents, worry about how this will impact the kids more than anything.

My fondest hope, and what I'd like to hang on to, is the idea that it could be a year filled with kindness.

I unexpectedly received a package in the mail from an address I didn't recognize.

I opened the box to find a beautifully beaded necklace with a pendant holding a picture of my grandparents, both of whom I lost this year.

Fussy Necklace

Mrs. Fussypants sent it to me in an act of incredible thoughtfulness.

When I wear it I feel like I am carrying them with me.

Her
gift reminded me that simple gestures of pure kindness make the hard stuff so much more bearable.

I hope my 2008 resolution can be to pass her thoughtfulness along.

Happy New Year!

XO,
OTJ

What a wonderfully kind gift!

I am a little concerned about what you said regarding 'What you were doing at midnight'...babies, boobies and diapers all years long!

what a beautiful gift!! Maybe that means the new year will be filled with wonderful memories.

So, I'm just going along reading your post. A wee-bit worried for those 3 families & nodding along about wild nekkid kiddos running wild for another year.

And what happened? I saw my necklace. What do ya know -I was touched & burst into tears.

I swear these pregnant hormones are gonna do me in! ;)

So happy you liked it & you look beautiful wearing it.

Love & Blessings for '08,
Alli

Good Lord. This means that I am going to spend the rest of 2008 like I did in 2007...WISHING I were sleeping. :S

That necklace is beautiful.
Very thoughtful of her.

Mrs. Fussypants Rocks!

At midnight I was alone and rearranging my bedroom. I do hope that doesn't go on all year!

If the breaking-up folks can be evolved enough to realize that the kids need love and permission to love ALL the adults in their lives, everything else will work itself out.

Happy New Year to you too! I was asleep by 11:30. So lame.

What a lovely gesture and a beautiful necklace.

Happy new year! Some time just before midnight, I hovered above sleep long enough to feel hubby crawling into bed.

"Hmnth nw yrrr ..." I muttered, and I think he mumbled something similar back.

Perhaps a sign that we need to work on our communication skills this year?

Claire B. said...

At midnight I was drinking champagne, kissing my husband, and hugging a bunch of my friends.

I can deal with lots more of that for 2008.

What a beautiful necklace, gesture, and tribute. Kindness sounds good for 2008, too.

It would seem that I'll be spending my year felling bad for Dick Clark.

Cool necklace!

Very pretty and sweet necklace (you've got great collarbones).

It goes without saying that your friends are in a difficult situation.

Jeff and I observed the same kind of swirl with his brother and his (Jeff's) best friend's wife....it was dramatic to say the least.

I'm not sure I want to think about 2008 as in any way similar to 2007. I want 2008 to be pure joy. I spent the last moments of 2007 talking with someone I love, and that's the way I want to spend 2008--happy and gushy feeling.

BOSSY said...

Jess: you are so dang cute you made Bossy forget what she was going to say, but it had something to do with LAWSY MERCY she sure hopes midnight isn't indicative of what the whole year holds, because at midnight Bossy's husband was playing Dance Dance Revolution in black dress socks.

Jess, that necklace...I would have bawled like a baby opening that package. It is beautiful.

As for 2008 - Transformation is what I am hoping for...

Anyhow, Happy New Year you hot piece of blogness ;)

I know, that because of you, I will be blowing nice kisses in 2008.

Not that I blow mean kisses, but the imagery from you "kiss" post reminds me to spread kindness whenever I can to whomever I can...I call it blowing nice kiss a la Oh the Joys.

Thanks.

The necklace is beautiful, what a thoughtful gift. Just goes to show you there is still random acts of kidness out there.
I too was asleep at the new year but awaken 2 hours later by the toddler down the hall. My resolution this year is to get him to sleep through the night before next year!

Aimee Greeblemonkey said...

How sweet is that? The blogworld can be so lovely sometimes.

Happy New Year, Jess.

we_be_toys said...

A good resolution indeed - to commit random (or not so random)acts of kindness throughout the year. It's what I call the sugar on the bowl of cereal that is life.

I love the necklace - what a beautiful and thoughtful gesture - its pretty too!

Queen Karana said...

Love your new necklace... that truly is a thoughtful gift, and it looks gorgeous on you.

As far as the new year goes... I think that means that we will find ourselves sitting on the couch watching TV an awful lot. This might not be a good thing.

And really? You're always asleep before midnight? That is SO impressive. If I'm asleep before midnight there's something "wrong" with me... like I'm sick. I should make a resolution to get more sleep.

b*babbler said...

What a beautiful necklace. A wonderful way to keep them close by you.

I'm sorry about your friends. That will be tough for everyone - for them, for family, for their children and for the friends, caught in between. I hope everyone handles it with grace and dignity.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I was asleep at midnight too - I can't remember the last time I stayed up.

She is a lovely lady - we could all make 2008 better than 2007 by practicing her kindness.

I'm so glad she sent you that.

kittenpie said...

How lovely, J.

And um, by that logic? More eating and drinking of tea. Alrighty then...

imaginary binky said...

So, I'm going to spend the rest of the year drinking champagne, making fun of Dick Clark because he sounds like he's had way more to drink than me (thus making me go to hell), while Amos is overactive and tired? Sounds about right.

That necklace is gorgeous and wonderful. That Fussy Britches. She is the bee's knees.

Jo Beaufoix said...

Happy New Year.
At midnight I was with Mr B and friends in our lounge drinking nice wine, and watching Jools Holland's Hootenanny which was full of fab music.
Miss E was boinging around like a loony. Miss M was sleeping.
So looks like we'll be having an interesting year.

Well, if what you say is true then it looks like my year is going to be pretty heavy on the booze and slight on the company! It was just me, my hubby and many martini's on New Years!
Very funny, I love it. And if it's true I can't complain because I had a great New Years Eve.

By the way, it's my first time commenting on your page and I LOve your Page!
